I’m a woodworker. I’m working on an installation of bookshelves and file cabs for a high-end residence. The shelves and cabs will be supported by connections off of posts and connections to the wall at the rear.
I’ve included drawings and a photo.
My question is whether my design to support the shelves, which will carry the most weight, is robust enough.
The shelves span 10’ and have an internal steel structure to keep from sagging. My estimate of weight, when loaded with books is 330 lbs. They will be supported in front by angle connections to the post.
My post connection is 3/16” x 1-1/2” aluminum angle with two FLT HD machine screws – ¼” – 28 TPI. The post is square tube A36 steel, 2” with an 1/8” wall. The angle penetrates into the shelves & cab sides 3/4”, so they stand off from the post. I cannot install a back plate for more thread depth. I could use nut serts, but then I’d have to go to ½” angle so I could machine-out the 3/32” washer head on the nut-sert.
The idea is a clean minimalist structure.
The same connection is for the rear of the shelves/cabs, although there will be five 8” angles.
My concern is whether my post connections will be robust enough to support the weight.
