Can you please help me. Some background.
I have a fireplace mantle. It is 7’ long by 4” thick and 10” wide. I am mounting it to a 10” thick concrete wall. I will use 2x round stock 1045 steel bars. The bars will be 18” long and 10” of that will be in the concrete wall, leaving 8” to go into the wood mantle. The mantle 244 lbs. what diameter rod will safely do the job. Thank you

Considering that it’s been a week after you posted this and there are no replies to your question, and having read your post twice already, I believe it would be helpful to have a diagram depicting what you’re trying to describe here. That would help us understand and possibly to help you with a solid suggestion.

load on cut. For example, for M8 studs made of 1045 steel without temperature treatment, the load for cutting is 18.4 kN. This means that if you mount it tightly against a wall, then with a safety margin of 20%, you only need two M8 studs, but I would take M10.
If there is a distance between the concrete wall and the mantle, then this should be considered as a bend, and the thickness will be needed more, it will depend on the attachment points relative to the center of mass and the gap between the wall and mania.
